The troubles of Evander Kane have taken a disturbing turn. Kane earlier this year filed for bankruptcy claiming nearly $27 million in debt, and on Saturday postings from his wife on Instagram have alleged that the San Jose Sharks winger has been gambling on NHL games.

“The League was made aware this evening of a post on social media alleging that Evander Kane bet on NHL games.” The NHL said via Twitter. “The integrity of our game is paramount and the League takes these allegations very seriously. We intend to conduct a full investigation and will have no further comment at this time.”

A player gambling on games has meant permanent banishment ever since the Black Sox Scandal in 1919, when eight Chicago White Sox players took money to throw the World Series. All eight players were found not guilty in the courts, but Commissioner Keenesaw Mountain Landis banned all of them for life for throwing games or having knowledge that games were to be thrown.

The same went for Pete Rose, who was made permanently ineligible after being caught gambling on baseball when manager of the Cincinnati Reds in 1989.

The NHL will thoroughly investigate the allegations against Kane because of the potential stain it could create on the sport and depending on the accuracy of the allegations, his career could be in jeopardy.
