Dumba and Talbot on the Protection List

The protection list is now final after a couple of years of speculation. The list changed numerous times along the way and even up until last week's buyout of Suter and Parise we had to speculate what Bill Guerin and his team would do.

In the end Matt Dumba is added to the list of three defenseman, joining Jared Spurgeon and Jonas Brodin. Nico Sturn is added to the seven forward list, taking Parise's place. The remaining forwards are Mats Zuccarello, Joel Eriksson Ek, Marcus Foligno, Kevin Fiala, Jordan Greenway, and Ryan Hartman.

Guerin had a decision with his goalies after Cam Talbot's sensational season, Kaapo Kahkonen ends up to be the netminder left unprotected. All along it appeared that Kahkonen would be the one protected but Talbot played his way to the protected list and combine that with his very reasonable contract that has two years remaining, and Guerin's choice became fairly clear.

So that leaves one of Carson Soucy, Kahkonen, or possibly Seattle takes a flyer on RFA, Brennan Menell considering his upside and his tremendous success with Iowa in 2019-20 and then in the KHL last season.

This of course assumes that Guerin does not make any side deal with Seattle to potentially take Victor Rask or some other combination of players to keep either Soucy or Kahkonen.

Guerin has a plan, that we know, we just do not know what exactly that entails but it is unfolding and the protection list is just the next step in the process.
