The Carolina Hurricanes announced yesterday that they’ve signed defenseman Eric Gelinas to a one-year contract, worth $750,000.

Gelinas is 30 years old and has spent the last three years in Europe, scoring 34 points in 46 SHL games this season. The defender has played in 189 career NHL games, split between the New Jersey Devils and Colorado Avalanche.

Given Carolina’s defensive depth, it’s hard to imagine Gelinas earning a spot with the Hurricanes next season. That said, extra depth never hurts and with the Hurricanes in danger of potentially losing a defenseman in the expansion draft, you never know what can happen.
