In this edition of the hotstove, we share our thoughts on the opening series we’re most looking forward to watching.

I’m really excited to see Minnesota vs Vegas. I just think it’s going to be ultra competitive; perhaps more than most realize or expect.

The Wild went 5-1-2 against Vegas this season and posted a 54 xGF% at 5v5 during those games (they were above 50% including all situations, too). They out-played Vegas. Eight games isn’t a crazy large sample, of course, but against one specific team I think it’s enough to tell us something; and it told us the Wild can hang with the powerhouse Golden Knights.

Now, I’m not picking Minnesota in this series. I think the Golden Knights have more firepower up front – and on defense – and they have arguably the best goaltending tandem in the league.

If Marc-Andre Fleury falters, they can go to the very competent Robin Lehner. If Cam Talbot falters...Minnesota is screwed. Kaapo Kahkonen, who finished with a GSAE (goals saved above expectation) of -13.1, would get lit up like a Christmas tree against the Golden Knights’ offense.

Ultimately, I think goaltending will be the difference. But if Cam Talbot can hold up, I wouldn’t be surprised to see this series go the distance; and feature a couple lengthy overtime games.

Obviously I will be keeping a close eye on the Oilers and Habs series...oops sorry I meant Oilers and Jets, getting ahead of myself a bit. But I think the most exciting series will be the one between the two Florida teams; the Lightning and Panthers facing off in the playoff for the first time.

The Panthers have been a great team all year off of great seasons from the likes of Barkov, Huberdeau, the young Verhaeghe, Duclair and more. On top of that, Sam Bennett has come in and not only secured a second line centre position, but has looked brilliant in the role, putting up 15 points in 10 games. Choosing to play a former 4th overall pick known for his offensive ability in a top six role with other skilled players was a gutsy move by the Panthers organization.

On the other side, aside from Tom Wilson, there might not be a bigger villain in the league than the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Lightning have been circumventing the cap all season long with their most blatant efforts being the sudden return of Stamkos and Kucherov for the playoffs where the team doesn't need to worry about their cap hits. Outside of Lightning fans, I think most people will be cheering against Tampa on this one.
