The Rangers and Owner James Dolan have FIRED their team President John Davidson and GM Jeff Gorton.
The move is being called coincidental, but OF COURSE is not. The timing, at the very least, is tied to the recent scandal in the NHL, where the league chose NOT to suspend Tom Wilson of the Capitals, prompting the Rangers to put out a scolding rebuke.
Dolan is known to not care what the NHL thinks of him, but JD and Gorton do care, and were not happy with the statement and that made Dolan even more angry and, feeling the team is too soft and that the climate had to change, fired the two and replaced BOTH of them with Chris Drury.
Yes...Chris Drury goes from assistant GM to TEAM PRESIDENT/GM. But he won't be alone..Dolan talks to a lot of people and it's not hard to imagine that Mark Messier and Glenn Sather also had his ear regarding this move.. Sather is still employed by the Rangers and as a senior advisor and alternate governor...Messier and Sather WILL be "helping" Drury I am told.
Mark Messier wants to be a coach...NOT a GM.
Sources tell me that Sather, who lives famously in Western Canada, came into NY three weeks ago to meet with Dolan, and those meetings didn't go well...And that was the point at which JD and Jeff's fate's seemed to be settled.
When Dolan fired them today they were told by him, "I was going to fire you after the season, so I might as well fire you now."
This is being sold as "The Rangers underachieved." That is simply not the case, as the team has shown great promise and progress this season...
Drury inherits a great base to work with for sure.
