The Los Angeles Kings traded a veteran player and signed a key forward to a contract extension this week. Here’s a recap of news and notes from the week.

KINGS LOSE TWO GAMES, TWO OTHER GAMES POSTPONED

The Kings were swept in their two-game series against the Vegas Golden Knights this week, falling 4-2 on Monday, then 6-2 on Wednesday. The Kings were supposed to face the Colorado Avalanche in two games later in the week, but they were postponed due to COVID protocol.

CARTER TRADED TO PENGUINS

Los Angeles made one deal as the deadline neared and it was a relatively major one. Veteran forward Jeff Carter was dealt to the Pittsburgh Penguins, in exchange for two conditional draft picks. Carter is 36 years old and was with the Kings for the team’s Stanley Cup wins in both 2012 and 2014.

IAFALLO SIGNS FOUR-YEAR EXTENSION

Forward Alex Iafallo signed a four-year contract extension on Monday, which carries an AAV of $4 million. Iafallo has 11 goals and 26 points in 41 games and was set to become an unrestricted free agent in the offseason.

As for our poll questions this week, here are the results, along with my thoughts on how they turned out.

QUESTION: How do you feel about the Jeff Carter trade?

(Votes: 273)

Good move: 55%
Don’t feel strongly either way: 31%
Bad move: 14%

Carter is a key veteran but the Kings couldn’t turn down the opportunity to get multiple mid-round picks in return. Especially given Iafallo was re-signed, the Kings were able to continue to build for the future and the deal also frees up another spot in the lineup for younger talent.

QUESTION: Were you surprised Jeff Carter was traded at the deadline?

(Votes: 290)

Yes: 54%
No: 46%

Given the current market, I didn’t see Carter getting moved. Even with retained salary, I was pretty surprised to see a team was willing to give up multiple draft picks for him.

QUESTION: Are you happy with Alex Iafallo’s contract extension?

(Votes: 113)

Yes: 80%
No: 20%

I certainly think this was a fair deal for Iafallo, both in price and term. He’s still young and can continue to make an impact with the team, even as key prospects start to earn roster spots.
