The Carolina Hurricanes played three games this week and completed a deal ahead of the trade deadline. Here’s a recap of news and notes from the week.

HURRICANES WIN TWO OF THREE GAMES

Carolina started the week with a 3-1 loss to the Detroit Red Wings, before sweeping the Nashville Predators in a two-game series, with a 4-1 win on Thursday and 3-1 win last night.

FLEURY TRADED TO DUCKS FOR HAKANPAA

The Hurricanes didn’t have an overly busy trade deadline, but they did make one notable move. Carolina dealt defenseman Haydn Fleury to Anaheim, in exchange for defender Jani Hakanpaa and a sixth-round pick in 2022.

HAKANPAA SCORES FIRST GOAL WITH HURRICANES

In his second game with the Hurricanes, Hakanpaa scored his first goal with his new team, coming against the Nashville Predators last night. It was also Hakanpaa’s first goal of the season and only the second of his NHL career.

As for our poll question this week, here are the results, along with my thoughts on how they turned out.

QUESTION: Do you like the Fleury for Hakanpaa trade for the Hurricanes?

(Votes: 106)

Yes: 54%
No: 46%

While Hakanpaa isn’t going to add much offense, he’s a steady presence on the back end and I think he’ll be a big help in a playoff run. Haydn Fleury was potentially still developing but with Carolina’s deep defensive group, he wasn’t getting much of an opportunity and would’ve been left exposed in the expansion draft anyways. Personally, I’m a fan of the trade.
