Oilers and Canucks Game Postponed Once More

For a moment I'm going to walk you all through my creative process for writing. A few days ago I was prepared to title my Game Blog for Friday "Guaranteeing an Oilers Win." Partially because I know when I've done it in the past people get very angry and secondly because I completely believed it.

The Canucks were going to be jumping into a game that they were woefully unprepared for, no practice time and still missing a number of roster players. Meanwhile the Oilers have been at home, well rested and ready to go. It absolutely would have been a one-sided match.

However after reading what the Canucks players were going through, the very candid and excellent comments from J.T. Miller, I was not going to use that title. Turns out it doesn't matter either way because the NHL has listened and the game is postponed once more.

It was an ugly look from the League which really just looked like they wanted to put their heads down and power through the schedule and damn the consequences. Once more these games will be rescheduled. It's the right move even if Oilers fans are going to be a little miffed at having to wait another day to watch hockey.

OTHER THOUGHTS

- RNH was not going to join the team on this road trip and I'm assuming that remains the case even without this Canucks game. RNH should be available for the Montreal game on the 19th.

- Dmitry Kulikov will have to go through the quarantine process coming over the border and while he may be technically available for the game on the 21st I'm assuming it will actually be the following game on the 26th against the Jets. Unless anouther game is rescheduled in between those two dates.

- It's looking almost guaranteed at this point that the Oilers and the Jets will face off in the first round. Neither team did much to improve at the deadline, with the Oilers adding Kulikov and the Jets adding Benn. These Jets games this month will be crucial.

- Don't look now but the Calgary Flames are suddenly making a late push to the party. The Flames sit 4 points back of the Canadiens but Montreal has 3 games in hand. BUT Calgary has four more games against the Canadiens and boast a 4-1 record against Montreal. I don't know what would be funnier, seeing Calgary make a late push and finish just barely on the outside or after making all his changes see Bergevin get fired for missing the post-season.

- If I had a vote for the Hart Trophy this season I would likely give it to Auston Matthews at this time. He is scoring at an unbelievable rate right now; at nearly a goal a game clip with 32 goals in 40 games. He has 17 more goals than the next highest player on his team, four more PPG than the next highest player and four more EV goals than anyone else in the league. He's had an amazing season and should win the honour... this time.
