In this edition of the hotstove, we share our choices for the biggest trade deadline winners.

The Detroit Red Wings.

I loved what Steve Yzerman was able to accomplish with the Anthony Mantha trade. That’s not a knock on Mantha by any means; I think he’s a very good player and will do well in Washington. I was just blown away by the return he fetched.

Jakub Vrana is an ultra-talented, ultra-efficient point producer. He’s produced at an extremely high clip on a per minute basis for years. He just hasn’t gotten the opportunity. Much like Kevin Fiala in Minnesota, I think Vrana will blossom with a bigger role (funny enough, it was Peter Laviolette underplaying both of them). He’s very good, he’s nearly two years younger than Mantha, and the Red Wings were able to pick up 1st and 2nd round picks to further move along their rebuild.

I think this was the best trade any tram made at the deadline.

Sean Maloughney

Well clearly the winner of the trade deadline is Taylor Hall for getting out of Buffalo. Boston gets zero props for the trade as Hall's NMC essentially dictated everything.

The best seller clearly has to be the Detroit Red Wings as Yzerman continues to make smart moves wherever he goes. Getting a younger Vrana for Mantha alone is actually a sneaky good move but to also add a first and a second round pick in the deal as well is highway robbery. Add into that another 5th for Jon Merrill and a 4th for helping facilitate the Savard trade and it was a good day for the Red Wings. Honorable mention to Calgary for receiving essentially 2 seconds for Bennett and a 3rd for Rittich.
