The Los Angeles Kings traded veteran forward Jeff Carter to the Pittsburgh Penguins last night, in exchange for a conditional third-round pick in 2022 and a conditional fourth-round pick in 2023.

Carter is 36 years old and had eight goals and 19 points in 40 games this season. He’s been with the Kings since 2012 and won two Stanley Cups with the team. Los Angeles will retain half of Carter’s salary for the remainder of this season, as well as next year.

The third-round pick in 2022 will be upgraded to a second-round pick, should the Penguins get to the Stanley Cup Finals this year and Carter play in 50 per cent of their games. The fourth-round pick in 2023 could become a third-round pick if Carter plays in at least 50 games next season (according to CapFriendly).

The Kings also re-signed forward Alex Iafallo to a four-year contract extension today, which carries an AAV of $4 million. Iafallo has 11 goals and 25 points in 39 games with the Kings this year, a pace of 23 goals and 53 points per 82 games. He’s 27 years old and was set to become an unrestricted free agent in the offseason.

I’ll release articles in the coming days to give more in-depth thoughts on both the trade and the signing.
