Last night the Trade Deadline kicked off with a number of moves including the likes of Jeff Carter, Nick Foligno, and of course Taylor Hall being traded. So far the Edmonton Oilers have been dead quiet but recent rumours suggest we may see a deal or two before days end.

First let's discuss the most recent rumour that is that the Edmonton Oilers are working to acquire Jamie Oleksiak. The 28 year old 6/7 255lb left shot defenseman is a giant who excels in no event hockey, something Tippett clearly favours in his blueline. I'm a huge fan of his game and he would add a different element to the Oilers top 4. It would also allow Tippett to run something. more like this:

Nurse-Barrie
Oleksiak-Bear
Jones-Larsson

A puck mover on every pair. This is just a rumour right now and even as I write this I am seeing that Frank Seravalli is saying the defenseman may be staying in Dallas. Something to keep an eye on.

Especially after Taylor Hall was moved for Bjork and a 2nd, there were plenty of angry Oilers fans crying out for Holland to do something. People tend to get crazy in this town whenever Taylor Hall's name comes up.

I remain adamant now that Hall is not a player this team should look at acquiring, even in the off-season. The Oilers main game right now is generating chances off the rush, something that they are already among the best in the league at doing. What we have seen them struggle with, against the likes of Montreal and Toronto is when they are stood up at the blue line. Adding a Hall does not prevent that from happening. A player like a Rikard Rakell who provides a different facet of the game would help. Anaheim is reportedly asking for a 1st+ for his services. That is a move I would do.

To me the Oilers this season are good enough to compete in the playoffs but not good enough to win a Cup this season. They do not have a 2nd a 3rd or a 5th round pick. Edmonton simply does not have the assets this season to load up for a long Cup run and it's poor management to walk into a draft with no picks.

I will do my best to update this blog as the day goes on.

OILERS ACQUIRE KULIKOV

Waiting on the details but it sounds the Oilers have acquired Dmitri Kulikov for a conditional 2022 pick.

Kulikov does not bring any offense but he excels in a shutdown role and faced the toughest competition and succeeded in his time in New Jersey. Kulikov will likely slot into the second pairing role. This is an upgrade over Jones, Russell, and Lagesson on the left side right now.
