It was a big day for Cole Caufield yesterday, not only was he going to play his first professional hockey game but before that, he was also announced as the winner of the Hobey Baker award as the best college hockey player in the USA. Prior to the game, coach Joel Bouchard let him watch the ceremony in his office because he thought he should get to experience that, even if he couldn’t be there in person.

When the puck dropped though, it was obvious that Caufield’s mind was on the game and nothing else. The 15th overall pick of the 2019 NHL draft was all business and gave the fans exactly what they wanted to see, in a 5-3 Rocket win, the youngster had 2 goals and one assist.

Bouchard had said that Caufield would be placed in the right conditions to succeed and he wasn’t kidding. He put his shiny new player on a line with veterans Jordan Weal and Yannick Veilleux and was also on the power play. It’s on the man advantage that Caufield opened his pro goal account, with a one-timer from what has come to be known as his office, in other words, Ovechkin’s power play spot.

Later on, he showcased some great stickhandling to make his way to the Marlies’ net and when he lost the puck, captain Xavier Ouellet was there to put it in. Then, in the 3rd period with the score tied at 3-3, the diminutive winger took over the puck and put on the jets to go on a breakaway. Scott made the first save, but Caufield was quick to put his rebound in to notch his 2nd goal of the evening which would turn out to be the game winning goal.

Needless to say, Caufield’s first outing set Habs Twitter ablaze and there were numerous calls to: “Call him up to the Habs already!”. While his performance was impressive, one game doesn’t make a career, and Habs fans would do well to curb their enthusiasm. I’m not saying don’t call him up this year but take it one step at a time. Let him play a few games in the AHL and if his dominant play carries on, then you can call him up.

Of course, with Brendan Gallagher out and the Canadiens struggling to find their scoring touch, this type of player would be highly useful, but he remains a 20-year-old who’s yet to play in the NHL. The Rocket is playing the Marlies again at 3:00 PM today and then, Joel Bouchard’s team has a week off… Will Marc Bergevin be able to resist the temptation?

Montreal would be smart to take it slow and avoid another Ryan Poehling like scenario. The Habs fanbase thought a savior was born when he scored a hat trick in a meaningless game against the Leafs in his NHL debut and got the shootout winner. A couple of years on, many are calling him a bust even though he was always projected to be a good 3rd line centre and not an offensive dynamo.

Tonight, the Canadiens will take on the Jets and will try and avenge their 4-2 loss from Thursday with Allen getting a chance to make things right. Both Joel Armia and Ben Chiarot skated in Brossard before the morning skate, which is good news for the Canadiens. While the Chiarot-Weber pairing hasn’t been great this year, at least when he was in, the Canadiens used 6 d-men and not 5 like in last game’s 3rd period.

As for the lines, not many changes to report aside from the fact that Toffoli is now on Suzuki’s right and Anderson is on Staal’s (those are the changes we saw during the game Thursday). On defense, Otto Leskinen is paired up with Alexander Romanov, meaning that Mete will sit out tonight.
