The Canadiens can compete with the Leafs, you know this, I know this, even the Leafs know this, but at times it looks like the Habs don’t. Tonight, they played nervously to start the first, were dominated in that first frame, but still managed to come out of it tied. They then dominated the 2nd, but couldn’t convert once in those 20 minutes. Unfortunately, it was the team of the 1st period that came out for the 3rd.

You cannot play a good 20 minutes, wake-up for the last 5 minutes and hope to beat a team like the Leafs. They are a talented bunch and the only way for the Habs to come out on top is to work tirelessly, they lack the elite scoring that Toronto has in bunches.

Full marks for Corey Perry tonight, he got both of the Canadiens’ goals, drew a big penalty and was quite simply a beast. At nearly 36-years old, he logged over 18 minutes of ice-time and gave his all.

Jake Allen also had a solid outing (aside from early jitters in the first) and saved 29 of the 32 shots he received for a .906 save percentage. In his last 8 games, the Canadiens have given him only 15 goals.

If the Habs could have played like they did in the 2nd for the whole way through, they could have won this. Toronto committed 29 turnovers tonight, most of which came from Montreal’s intense forecheck in the middle frame. Kudos to Jack Campbell, he fully deserved the first star with 32 saves to win his 10th consecutive game, a franchise record.

I’ve been impressed with Jonathan Drouin on numerous occasions this season, but not tonight. He wasn’t engaged, he wasn’t battling, and he was visible for the wrong reasons. It was the kind of match in which Gallagher’s energy would have been useful to lead the charge to mount a comeback…

There will be no time to dwell on this loss as the Habs will now head back to Montreal to face the Jets tomorrow night, this time at 7:00 PM.
