Today the Canadiens announced that they put Brendan Gallagher on long-term injured reserve since the thumb injury he suffered in the last game will keep him out of action for at least 6 weeks. It’s not great news considering how important he is for the team, but for the first time in along time, they have the depth to replace his offensive production if not his heart and energy. The right wing is crowded in Montreal with Toffoli, Anderson, Frolik, Armia and Kotkaniemi who has been given the spot for now.

Furthermore, the fact that the diminutive winger is now on LTIR means that the Canadiens can go out spending this trade deadline. His placement on there doesn’t give them extra cap space, but the ability to exceed the cap limit by the amount Gally makes which is $3 750 000.

Bergevin said not long ago that his hands were tied and that any deal would have to be money in for money out, but that’s no longer the case. He now has $3.75 M to work with and when Gallagher is healthy (hopefully sometime in the first round), he’ll be able to come in since there are no cap consideration in the playoffs.

After the Harris watch which ended badly and the Caufield watch which ended quickly and happily, it’s time for the trade watch! Watch this space Habs fans, I would bet this new development means that Bergevin will move again…
