In this edition of the hotstove, we share our thoughts on Jordan Binnington’s six-year, $36 million extension with the St. Louis Blues.

I generally am not in favor of committing big money to goaltenders – especially over a long period of time – and this is not one of the exceptions.

I think Jordan Binnington is overrated. He burst onto the scene in spectacular fashion a few years ago but he really hasn’t been that impressive over the last little while.

Binnington saved 0.3 goals above expected last season over the course of 51 appearances, per MoneyPuck. That’s really not impressive; I mean, Jake Allen was worth +4.2 GSAE in less than half of the time.

This season he owns a pedestrian .906 save percentage and has actually been worth 3.5 goals *below* expectation. That puts him just one spot behind *checks notes* Jonathan Quick.

Call me crazy but I wouldn’t be rushing to make that kind of commitment to a goaltender who has allowed 3.2 more goals than expected over his last 71 appearances.

I do believe Binnington will bounce back a bit; I think he is a little above average. But $6 million per seems like a lot to spend for that.

I feel like the Blues just as easily could have signed somebody like Antti Raanta or Jaroslav Halak in free agency and gotten as good, or better, goaltending for a cheaper price.

It's a great deal for Binnington and it's not an awful one in my opinion for the Blues. Pre COVID I don't think many would bat an eye at a 6 by 6 deal for a goalie but in the current economic climate it does seem a tad on the high side.

Over the past three seasons, Binnington ranks 14th at 5 on 5 SV% of all goalies who have logged at least 1000 minutes, (there are 72 of them) with a 0.928SV%. At first glance looking at Binnington's total SV% this year of .908 it would appear as if he has had a massive drop off but in reality his 5 on 5 numbers still sit at a SV% of 0.920%.

On the PK Binnington has posted a 0.851SV% and the Blues as a whole sit 27th in the league on the PK. Part of that should be on the goaltender but the systems in place should also be questioned.

Ultimately Binnington is a starter and at 27 this deal won't put him past what should be his prime years.
