The Calgary Flames made a change behind the bench late Thursday night, firing head coach Geoff Ward and bringing back Darryl Sutter as the team's head coach.

The move to relieve Ward of his duties came with the club sitting at 11-11-2 through 24 games this season, sitting two points out of a playoff spot in the North Division. And in what feels like a rare move, the decision was made after a 7-3 win over the Senators on Thursday night.

As mentioned, this is Sutter's second stint with the Flames. The Alberta native originally served as Calgary's head coach on December 28, 2002 through July 12, 2006, with Calgary advancing to the 2004 Stanley Cup Final against the Tampa Bay Lightning under his leadership. Sutter also served as the team's general manager from Apr. 11, 2003 through Dec. 28, 2010.

Sutter was last behind a bench in 2016-17 as the head coach of the Los Angeles Kings, and won two Stanley Cups as the Kings' bench boss in 2012 and then again in 2014.

The Flames are looking at Sutter as more than a quick fix, too, as Sutter's deal with the Flames is for the remainder of this season and then another two seasons, per Pierre LeBrun.

The 62-year-old Sutter has a career coaching record of 634-467-101-83 over 17 years, with his 634 victories standing as the 17th-most in league history.
