Penguins need to avoid self-owning themselves this time

The Penguins dropped a close contest against the Washington Capitals. The score was 5-2, but it included two empty-net goals. Things were tight in the third period until Drew O’Connor took a bad penalty and the Capitals scored the game winning goal on the ensuing power play.

The Penguins should feel fortunate Jim Rutherford isn’t their GM after this game. Tom Wilson scored the game winning goal, but only after he probably could have been ejected for his extremely late hit on Mark Jankowski.

The league does nothing about these hit with the intent to injure. In fact, Ray Whitney who works for the department of player safety will probably blame Jankowski for what happened

These are the big brains in charge. Their negligence opens the door for what happened to Jankowski last night. It had a direct impact in the outcome of the game. Not only was there no major, but the guilty player scored the game winning goal.

Changing your roster isn’t going to deter Wilson from doing these things. The league is the only entity that can deter a player like him. Taking his (and others like him) money is the only way to get the message across. The Penguins can’t do what they did the last time Tom Wilson roughed them up. They cannot go all galaxy brain and chase retribution. They need to continue to focus on their roster building to keep getting better hockey players so they can potentially make another deep playoff run. Brian Burke is going to need to show some discipline in refraining from chasing skilless grit. Burke’s son, who works at the Department of Player Safety, should get his dad to buy him some long pants and grow a pair and issue some actual discipline to Tom Wilson.
