The Blackhawks suffered their first multi-goal loss in over a month falling 5-3 to the Hurricanes. The last multi-goal loss was versus the Panthers in the third game of the season.

Despite making 33 saves, Kevin Lankinen saw shoddy defense in front of him. The Canes had 13 takeaways to the Hawks 3. Then as far as giveaways, the Hawks had 17 to the Canes 9.

Tonight's game is postponed giving the Hawks three days off before the next series in Columbus then head back home to host the Red Wings for a deuce and Lightning for a triple set.

Scoring Recap

1st Goal: Niederreiter (0-1)

Calvin de Haan failed to clear the zone and was forced into a turnover which led to a Nino Niederreiter shot from the top of the left circle that glanced off of Nikita Zadorov's shin.

2nd Goal: Trocheck (0-2)

Nicolas Beaudin, Adam Boqvist, Carl Soderberg, and Mattias Janmark got caught puck watching while bunched up in the slot not picking up Vincent Trocheck who was wide open for the shot.

3rd Goal: Kane (1-2)

Alex DeBrincat chipped the puck up the ice through the neutral zone to Patrick Kane. Even after tripping up a bit, Kane still deked around Brett Pesce with a spinorama to fool James Reimer.

4th Goal: Mitchell (2-2)

David Kampf drew 2 defenders to him before sending a feed over to Ian Mitchell coming down the center lane. Mitchell then took a few strides before rifling a shot from the top of the circles.

5th Goal: Necas (2-3) PP

Lankinen made an initial save on Martin Necas' point shot from the right circle but the puck floated in the air and de Haan unfortunately knocked it into the net with his glove.

6th Goal: Niederreiter (2-4) PP

Carolina masterfully moved the puck quickly on the power play with a passing sequence by Necas to Jesper Fast to Niederreiter who stuffed it home for his second tally of the night.

7th Goal: Slavin (2-5) EN

Jaccob Slavin added an insurance marker with an empty net goal from between the circles in his own end.

8th Goal: Soderberg (3-5) PP

With an inconsequential goal with 50 seconds left, Soderberg was able to redirect Kane's point shot past Reimer.

Other Plays

Shorter Passes

The Blackhawks were much better last night than in prior games by making less stretch passes and focusing more on shorter tape-to-tape passes to advance the puck up the ice.

Reversing the Puck

An area where the Hawks need to improve is having someone consistently on the opposite side to relieve pressure on one side of their end, not be up ice thinking offense already.

Hard to the Net

When the puck is behind the cage in the offensive zone, the Hawks need to have courage to make more attempts at taking it hard to the net rather than getting it back out to the point.

Watch the Face

On Necas' goal, de Haan got an inadvertent Teuvo Teravainen stick to the face. Also, Boqvist almost took a skate blade to the face when he hauled down Pesce late in the 3rd period.

Player Notes

Nicolas Beaudin

When the puck is on Beaudin's stick, he is crumbling more and more when pressured by the opposition. He needs to think and act more swiftly to move the puck out of the zone.

Adam Boqvist

After having a fairly strong showing in the last game after returning from COVID protocol, Boqvist regressed a bit in his defensive coverage. He at least played the body.

Dylan Strome

Clearly slumping, Dylan Strome has no points in his last 6 games and just 2 points this month. He isn't getting enough chances to set up others while also not good enough to generate his own.

Dominik Kubalik

One area of growth in Dominik Kubalik's game is his ability to not let others work him over. Instead, he has the strength and aggressiveness to push back as he's protecting the puck.

Brandon Hagel

Even though this doesn't get on the scoresheet besides on the opponent's side of the ledger as a PIM, Brandon Hagel draws penalties by way of his relentless pursuit of the puck.

Rockford Updates

As mentioned in the last blog, Evan Barratt and Matej Chalupa have grown more invisible and inconsequential during the early goings of the season. They need to push the pace more.

Despite not denting the scoresheet much at all, Andrei Altybarmakian and Tim Soderlund are still very noticeable on the ice with their non-stop motors and fearlessness.

Chad Yetman and Chris Wilkie are not as energetic as Altybarmakian and Soderlund but they play fundamentally dependable games that make a difference in all zones.
