Not as planned - a massive understatement.
But this performance and loss should not be pinned on Laine.
Any time you give up 5 goals (6 if you count the EN) you are going to find it hard to win. The Stars held the CBJ zone for what seemed like the entire 1st and 2nd periods. In-zone coverage and face-offs were suspect. The PK gave up 2 goals. But the PP looked impressive.
Following a superior homestand the trip to CHI and this stinker against DAL have brought the Jackets back to earth. They find themselves falling out of the playoff picture to 5th in the division. Which is made worse by the fact that they have also played the most games in the division (11).
What needs to happen to beat this Dallas team on Thursday?
1. Have a better start
This team was flat. I believe they were watching Laine to see what he could do. With some more practice time his impact on this team will be greater, but that does not mean that the other CBJ should pass him the puck and watch.
2. Better transition from defense to offense
Columbus found themselves hemmed in their defensive zone on Tuesday. They failed to clear the zone and struggled entering the offensive zone with control. Sustained pressure in the offensive zone would be nice too.
3. Skate as a team
Just because there is a 'star' on this team now doesn't mean the team identity should change. Columbus plays best when the skate a one unit. They play tight defense, have good goaltending and take the offensive opportunities they are given. When they don't panic and stay discipline the CBJ find a way to win.
With any luck it will be a better showing on Thursday (2 points would be great).
