The Carolina Hurricanes opened the season with a 3-0 win over the Detroit Red Wings last night.

To be honest, the majority of the game was pretty dull and neither team was able to find many quality chances for the firs two periods. The odd-man rushes were very limited and while the Hurricanes were a bit sloppy in their own end at times, it didn’t really lead to any key chances. Overall, Carolina’s defense group had a really strong game and limited opportunities for Detroit’s forwards.

The Hurricanes did take over in the third period, however, and the chances started to pile up. Thomas Greiss played well and was a key reason that Carolina wasn’t able to extend their lead until there were just a couple minutes remaining. The shots ended up as 42-14 for Carolina but again, the majority of scoring chances came in the third period.

Carolina’s top line was broken up and Nino Niederreiter joined Sebastian Aho and Teuvo Teravainen, while Andrei Svechnikov played with Martin Necas and Jordan Staal. We can bet that we’ll continue to see lines shuffled going forward.

Petr Mrazek wasn’t tested a ton, facing just 14 shots in the win, but he did need to make a few good saves. It’s not a game to base anything on but it was positive to see him starting the season with a shutout.

Overall, this was a solid game for the Hurricanes, especially for the defense group. It wasn’t perfect but they got the win and that’s what matters.
