The Anaheim Ducks will have a player joining camp on a professional tryout, while the team lost a defenseman this week, after he was claimed off waivers. Here’s the weekly recap:

BEN HUTTON JOINING DUCKS ON PTO

News just broke that defenseman Ben Hutton will be joining the Ducks on a professional tryout. This could be the result of Brendan Guhle’s injury, along with Chrstian Djoos being claimed by Detroit.

CHRISTIAN DJOOS CLAIMED BY RED WINGS

Defenseman Chrsitian Djoos was claimed by the Detroit Red Wings this week, after being placed on waivers. All other players who were placed on waivers by the Ducks, including David Backes, cleared.

BRENDAN GUHLE OUT SIX WEEKS

Defenseman Brendan Guhle will be out six weeks after suffering a knee injury. Guhle split the 2019-20 season between the NHL and AHL and should have a chance to win a lineup spot with the Ducks this season.

SIX DUCKS PROSPECTS EARN MEDALS AT WORLD JUNIORS, ZEGRAS WINS MVP

Ducks prospects Sam Colangelo, Jackson LaCombe, Henry Thrun and Trevor Zegras all won Gold at the World Juniors with the United States, while Jamie Drysdale won Silver with Canada. Albin Sundsvik (SWE) was the only Ducks prospect who failed to capture a medal at the tournament. Zegras was also named tournament MVP.

DUCKS RE-SIGN STOLARZ

The Anaheim Ducks re-signed Anthony Stolarz to a two-year extension this week, which kicks in for the 2021-22 season. Stolarz was placed on waivers and cleared later in the week.

As for our poll questions this week, here are the results, along with my thoughts on how they turned out:

QUESTION: Do you think the Ducks will finish ahead of the Avalanche this season?

(Votes: 38)

Yes: 68%
No: 32%

There’s a pretty strong majority who feel the Ducks will finish ahead of the Coyotes this season but I’m not quite sold. It’s certainly possible but I think Arizona may have the slight edge, when looking at the current rosters.

QUESTION: Do you think the Ducks will finish ahead of the Avalanche this season?

(Votes: 49)

No: 100%
Yes: 0%

Through almost a year of doing polls on this site, I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a 100 - 0 vote. That said, I also don’t think it’s very shocking to see this so lopsided.

QUESTION: Who were you most impressed by at the World Juniors?

(Votes: 117)

Trevor Zegras: 85%
Jamie Drysdale: 9%
Henry Thrun: 4%
Albin Sundsvik: 2%
Sam Colangelo: 0%
Jackson LaCombe: 0%

Not much of a debate here. Zegras led the tournament in points and was rightfully named MVP. He was pivotal for the United States throughout the tournament and looked like an NHL-ready forward.

QUESTION: Do you like Anthony Stolarz’s new contract with the Ducks?

(Votes: 39)

Yes: 90%
No: 10%

Stolarz’s two-year deal provides the Ducks with a solid backup option for after Ryan Miller likely retires next offseason. Considering the price, it could easily be buried as well, if necessary.

QUESTION: Who are you surprised to see on waivers?

(Votes: 273)

Christian Djoos: 51%
Neither: 24%
David Backes: 15%
Both: 8%
Someone else: 2%

Like many others, I was surprised to see Djoos on waivers. He had signed a $1 million extension in the offseason and looked to have a pretty good shot at making the roster.

QUESTION: Are you disappointed to see Christian Djoos claimed by the Red Wings?

(Votes: 65)

Yes: 63%
No: 37%

Djoos being claimed does impact Anaheim’s defensive depth to an extent. That said, there will be multiple other defenders looking to earn ice time on the bottom pairing, so Djoos likely would have had trouble earning ice time anyways.
