No, I’m not talking about the well-known “horror movie”, but about the Canadien's former 3rd overall pick from the 2012 draft who was traded to the Arizona Coyotes for Max Domi in the Summer of 2018. Since then, Domi played a couple of seasons with the Habs before being traded to Columbus in return for Josh Anderson. As for Galchenyuk, it’s fair to say that he’s bounced around a bit. When the Pens wanted to offload Phil Kessel and his big salary in the Summer of 2019, they sent him to the Coyotes (along with AHLer Dane Birks) in return for Galchenyuk (and AHLer Pierre-Olivier Joseph). In his one year in the desert, Chucky got 41 points in 72 games with a minus 19 rating. While the ‘Yotes tried to use him in as a centre in their top-6, he fast fell out of favour and landed on the 3rd line. Most expected him to find a home in Pittsburgh, playing alongside their top talent, but in 45 games, he only picked up 17 points and a minus 7 rating. Unconvinced by his performance, the Penguins sent him to Minnesota along with Calen Addison and a 1st round pick in the 2021 draft in return for Jason Zucker and he once again failed to impress, earning 7 points in 14 games in the remainder of the season and being held pointless in 4 playoffs games.
Things haven’t been easy for Galchenyuk in the NHL, he signed 3 contracts with the Habs his entry-level deal, a two-year bridge deal worth $2.8 M per and a three-year deal worth $4.9 M per. Since the signature of that contract in 2017, his stock has plummeted and nearly 20 days after the start of free agency, he was finally signed to a one-year show-me deal that will pay him $1.05 M by the Senators today. In 549 career games, Galchenyuk has gotten 135 goals and 185 assists for 320 points, which is better than any other player drafted in the top-10 of the 2012 draft.
There is no denying that this is a talented player but over the years, he has struggled with consistency and his commitment has been questioned. For Ottawa, taking a gamble on the former 3rd overall makes perfect sense. The Sens are young, they have plenty of room under the cap and well, what have they got to lose? Ottawa is currently undergoing a rebuild and they won’t have too much expectations coming into the new season. It will be interesting to see where he lands in their line-up, chances are he’ll fall behind Brady Tkachuk and Chris Tierney in the depth chart at left wing. Given the fact that he is somewhat of a defensive liability, his time as a centre truly appear to be over.
It’s still unknown when the new NHL season will start, even if the league has said that it is still targeting a January 1st start to the 2021 season. But whenever it starts, expect to see plenty of Galchenyuk against the Habs, be it as an Atlantic division rival or as a rival in the possible temporary Canadian division.
In other news, the AHL announced today that they are targeting a February 5th start date. Hopefully, the NHL does manage to pull-off a January return to play and the AHL teams know by the start of February which players will make up their roster.

Quand les Penguins ont voulu se débarasser de Phil Kessel et de son gros contrat pendant l’été de 2019, c’est aux Coyotes qu’ils l’ont envoyé (avec Dane Birks, un joueur de la ligue américaine) en retour de Galchenyuk (et de Pierre-Olivier Joseph – un autre joueur de la ligue américaine). Pendant sa seule saison dans le désert, Chuck a amassé 41 points en 72 matchs, avec un différentiel de -19. Bien que les Coyotes aient tenté de l’utiliser comme joueur de centre sur leur top-6, il a rapidement chuté dans l’alignement pour se retrouver sur la troisième ligne. La plupart s’attendait à ce qu’il rebondisse à Pittsburgh en ayant l’opportunité de jouer avec leurs joueurs talentueux, mais en 45 matchs, il n’a pu faire mieux que 17 points et une fiche de -7. Devant cette performance peu convaincante, les Penguins l’ont expédié au Minnesota avec Calen Addison et un choix de première ronde en 2021 en retour de Jason Zucker. Une fois de plus, il n’a pas réussi à impressionner, allant chercher 7 points en 14 matchs pendant le reste de la saison et ne s’inscrivant pas au pointage en 4 joutes de séries.
Les choses n’ont pas été faciles dans la LNH pour Galchenyuk, il a signé 3 contrats avec les Canadiens, son pacte d’entrée dans la ligue, un contrat de transition de 2 ans d’une valeur de 2.8$ M par an et une entente de 3 ans lui rapportant 4.9$ M par saison. Depuis la signature de ce dernier contrat en 2017, sa cote a beaucoup baissé et près de 20 jours après l’ouverture du marché des joueurs autonomes, il a finalement trouvé preneur. Les Sénateurs l’ont signé à un contrat d’un an pour lui donner l’opportunité de montrer ce qu’il peut faire à un salaire de 1.05$ M. En 549 matchs en carrière, l’attaquant a accumulé 135 buts et 185 passes pour 320 points, ce qui est mieux que tout autre joueur sélectionné dans le top 10 du repêchage de 2012.
On ne peut nier qu’il s’agit d’un joueur talentueux, mais au fil des ans, il a éprouvé des problèmes à performer de manière constante et son implication a également été questionnée. Pour Ottawa, prendre une chance sur l’ancien 3e choix au total semble parfaitement logique. Les Sens sont jeunes, ils ont beaucoup de place sous la masse salariale et en plus, qu’est-ce qu’ils ont à perdre? Ottawa est présentement en reconstruction et ils n’auront pas trop d’attentes pour la prochaine saison. Ce sera intéressant de voir où il se retrouvera dans leur formation, les chances sont qu’il se retrouvera derrière Brady Tkachuk et Chris Tierney à l’aile gauche. Considérant le fait qu’il n’est pas très fiable défensivement, son temps au centre semble bel et bien révolu.
Nous ne savons toujours pas quand la prochaine saison de la LNH prendra son envol, même si la ligue a dit qu’elle visait toujours un retour le 1er Janvier. Mais peu importe quand ça commencera, on peut s’attendre à voir Galchenyuk souvent que ce soit à titre de rival dans la division Atlantique ou de rival dans une possible division canadienne temporaire.
Dans un autre ordre d’idée, la ligue américaine a quant à elle annoncé qu’elle vise un retour sur la glace le 5 février. Espérons que la LNH aura réussi un retour en Janvier et que les équipes de l’AHL sauront quels joueurs formeront leur alignement.
