AHL February Thaw

The last time the Rochester Americans took the ice, they lost 5-2 at home to the Binghampton Senators. That game was played on March 11, 2020.

On Wednesday, the American Hockey League board of governors met to discuss the future of their league. A key takeaway from the AHL BOG meetings was the February 5, 2020 projected start date for the 2021 season due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.


Punxsutawney Phil saw his shawdow and it signaled the restart of AHL hockey action and an early Spring.


In the case of the Amerks, the AHL affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres, the return to play after the eleven month layoff will be a godsend.


The AHL continues to work with its member clubs to monitor developments and local guidelines in all 31 AHL cities. Further details regarding the 2020-21 American Hockey League season are still to be determined.


The National Hockey League Board of Governors have yet to commit to the date for the return to play for the 2021 season. January 1, 2020 has been a target date for the puck drop on the new NHL season, however, it is more and more likely that we won't see NHL hockey until late January 2021.
