we talked a bit about Bertuzzi’s value on my last post. The award today, to me, feels like a win for the organization. An upcoming extension worth 4 million or 4.25 would still be an upgrade. Hoping all is well with player and management. We still need Mantha signed (rumors of offer sheet, but I’m having trouble believing that). Timashov is currently looking into the SHL, but if he signs it will be for the year. With players taking 20% escrow plus a 10% deferment (before taxes of 30 to 50 percent plus agent fees) a league minimum deal gets down to 20% to 30% take home. Deals overseas are comparable, if not better, in that light. We’ll see what happens.

After having a day to chew on this deal, I decided to go back to my estimated “losses” for the NHL in the post season. The estimated cost of the “bubble” is being touted as 90 million. Adding to that the estimated loss at the gate (league average is 1.7 million per game) with 86 total post season games played (not counting the play in round) that’s 146.2 million. Added together you’re looking at 236.2 million in lost revenue. The added expense plus the projected playoff revenue. I actually think it would be more because ticket prices are usually higher and the amount of “swag” people purchase is through the roof. My early estimates on the post season losses are around 250 million. Depending on what happens with penalties due to the shortened season, that number could be eclipsed. Add that on top of the estimated 1 billion dollar loss of the shortened season. If teams can’t have fans, the deficits will continue to pile up, as players get their first checks on October 31. Things are looking a bit precarious, and so I understand Yzerman’s hesitation. Just have to wait and see.
