In this edition of the hotstove, we share our thoughts on which team(s) we’re most excited to follow this off-season.

I’m really interested to see what the Buffalo Sabres do.

They have a new GM, a rumored internal cap, and their Captain/best player wants to see meaningful improvements in order to stay happy where he is at. On top of all that, you have a fan base absolutely starving for any kind of success. I mean, the Sabres haven’t made the playoffs since 2010-11. That’s almost impossible to believe in a league where more than half the teams get in every season.

Are the Sabres going to push to improve in order to keep Eichel, and their fans, content? Will they be able to find a suitor willing to pay for Rasmus Ristolainen? Are they going to find a No. 1 goaltender? How much money are they willing to spend?

There are so many *big* questions in Buffalo, and we’re going to get answers over the next couple of weeks.

I'm really excited to see what the Vancouver Canucks are going to do over the coming weeks and months. They're in cap trouble, they have very little in the way of 2020 draft capital, and they've already been the subject of some crazy rumors. The team that starts next season is probably going to look very different than the one that took the organization on a nice little playoff run this past season.

Jim Benning has done a good job of bringing in elite talent like Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes, but his penchant for handing third and fourth liners multi-year, overpriced deals has put the team in an unenviable spot now that they want to compete. Watching him try to work his way out of that situation is going to be fun. Does it mean the keys are being turned over to Thatcher Demko? Could Brock Boeser actually be on his way out? There's been a lot of interesting talk on those fronts, among others, already.
