The Penguins and Oilers have been talking about Matt Murray. As of this point they are not finding common ground.

Can't blame the Oilers for turning down the first round pick ask. There are a ton of goaltenders on the market and you don't have to rush to trade away your first round pick on the first deal you see... The draft isn't until early October. The Oilers pick 14th overall. I definitely wouldn't be using that pick to trade for Matt Murray.

I always thought Jesse Puljujarvi was an interesting trade target for the Penguins in a Matt Murray trade. I don't know how the Oilers value him internally. Perhaps they don't value him quite as much as #14 overall after how things have played out since drafting him. The issue with Puljujarviv isn't so much with him as the fact Jim Rutherford already traded for Kasperi Kapanen. With Kapanen in the mix you have one less right wing spot to fill with Bryan Rust, Patric Hornqvist, Kapanen, and Brandon Tanev all playing on the right side.

I could think of worse returns for Murray than Puljujarvi even if the Penguins have those four right wing players. At the very least you know Edmonton is interested in the player and you can circle back for further discussions at a later date.

It only takes one team to value Matt Murray for the Penguins to land a quality return, but the wise teams will be prudent to see how this goalie market plays out before they splurge a 1st round pick for Matt Murray. Can't blame Jim Rutherford for

A. Trying to speed that process up
B. Targeting Edmonton as neither wise nor prudent
