Every article, I try to include a poll question for readers to vote on, then review the results from the week’s polls in a future article.

Before I get to them, here's Carolina's schedule for the first round:

In addition, we also now know that the Hurricanes will have the 13th overall pick in the NHL Draft.

In covering Carolina’s series against the Rangers, I haven’t had a chance to do a poll review in a while, so in this article, I’ll review the results that are still relevant right now. Here are the poll results and my thoughts on how they turned out.

QUESTION: Factoring in the injuries to Hamilton/Pesce, Carolina’s defense is:

(Votes: 36)

Weaker than last season: 67%
No different: 19%
Stronger than last season: 14%

Despite the additions of Joel Edmundson, Jake Gardiner, Brady Skjei and Sami Vatanen, injuries to Dougie Hamilton and Brett Pesce have weakened Carolina’s defense group. Hopefully the Hurricanes get Hamilton back for the first round, but as of now, Carolina’s defense group is weaker than last season.

QUESTION: Who should start for the Hurricanes in the first round?

(Votes: 52)

Petr Mrazek: 58%
James Reimer: 42%

I’m torn here. I think it’s likely that we’ll see Mrazek in net but I think I’d still prefer Reimer. That said, Mrazek also played great for the Hurricanes and I think no matter who they go with, it’s nice to know they have a second goalie who also performed well in their last game.

QUESTION: Who was Carolina’s best defenseman in the series?

(Votes: 56)

Jaccob Slavin: 63%
Brady Skjei: 13%
Sami Vatanen: 13%
Joel Edmundson: 5%
Haydn Fleury: 4%
Jake Gardiner: 4%

There was a pretty clear majority here and I have to agree. Slavin was playing against quality competition and was able to handle it well.

QUESTION: Are the Bruins a good matchup for the Hurricanes?

(Votes: 102)

Yes: 65%
No: 35%

As I said in the article, based on the way the two teams are trending, I like this matchup for Carolina. After seeing the Hurricanes dominate the Rangers and the Bruins not looking great in the round robin, I like Carolina’s chances here.
