For the second time in his four-year NHL career, Flyers defenseman Ivan Provorov has won the 2019-20 Barry Ashbee Trophy as the Flyers top defenseman. He also won the award in his rookie season of 2016-17.

The 23-year-old Provorov has become the 10th repeat winner in the history of the award, which dates back to the 1974-75 season. In the early years of the award, the panel of journalists and broadcasters tried to spread around the recognition. Over the first 11 years it was awarded, only Jim Watson and Bob "the Count" Dailey were repeat winners. However, injury issues/ games missed weighed into why Mark Howe only won the award once over the course of his first three seasons with the Flyers and did not win again after 1987-88 despite clearly still being the team's number one defenseman when healthy enough to be in the lineup.

Overall, Howe won the Ashbee Trophy four times, including three straight years. Later, Eric Desjardins claimed the Trophy a franchise-record seven times, including six in a row. More recently, Kimmo Timonen won five times.
