1) Two days, two awards for Flyers forward Scott Laughton. Today, Laughton learned that his teammates selected him as
the winner of the 2019-20 Pelle Lindbergh Memorial Trophy as the team's most improved player over the course of the season.
"I've been in the organization for a while and there have been ups and downs throughout the start of my career, so to get this award from the guys definitely means a lot," said Laughton. "I've tried to put hard work into my game and become a steady and consistent player who is relied on each night. It's a pretty special award for me and I'm grateful for their recognition."
On Tuesday, Laughton was selected by the Philadelphia chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association as the
the winner of the 2019-20 Yanick Dupre Memorial Class Guy Award.
Tomorrow, the Flyers will announce the winner of the Barry Ashbee Trophy (best defenseman). On Friday, they will hand out the Bobby Clarke Trophy (most valuable player).
2) Veteran Swedish hockey writer Per Bjurman wrote an outstanding article for Aftonbladet on Oskar Lindblom's cancer ordeal and how the support of his girlfriend, family, Flyers teammates, Flyers fans, and the hockey world as a whole gave him strength to fight onward. Lindblom recounted the emotion of calling his family in Sweden to break the terrifying news of his cancer diagnosis. Lindblom actually traveled him to be with his family over Christmas before beginning his chemotherapy treatments.
Now that he is cancer-free, Lindblom's first goal is to get back to living a normal life. Lindblom said he'd like, if possible, to get in a visit to Sweden this summer. His girlfriend, Alma, just went back for a visit. Oskar needs to be careful for awhile, especially with the Covid-19 situation across the United States, but he's still at least aiming to making the trip.
In the long-term, Lindblom said his goal is to play hockey again. He doesn't knew when that will be possible, and will takes thing as they come. On Tuesday, Lindblom was on the ice for the first-time since completing his final cancer treatment and ringing the bell before saying goodbye to the staff at Penn's Abramson Cancer Center.
Lindblom said that his teammates have been very supportive of him throughout his battle, and some of his best days over the last six months were his unannounced visits to see the team. During quarantine, where he was truly bound either to the hospital or to his apartment, he said that he relied heavily on Alma and they helped each other get through it.
3) In Wednesday's edition of Flyers Daily, Jason Myrtetus
chats with Flyers assistant coach Ian Laperriere about getting ready for the Stanley Cup playoffs. Lappy also discusses his playing and coaching careers. Yesterday, Jason and assistant coach Mike Yeo
had an in-depth discussion about the team's defense corps and penalty killing this season, among other topics.
4) Flyers center Kevin Hayes is now back in the Philadelphia area, joining teammates in the Skate Zone before formal training camp starts next week. On Wednesday, he told team senior communications director Zack Hill that he never considered opting out of the return-to-play plan and had been working out in a Boston gym in a small group during the quarantine.
In regard to the upcoming "hub city bubble" for the Stanley Cup playoffs (assuming the NHL and NHLPA ratify the current tentative agreement), Hayes said that it will be worth the inconveniences in his opinion.
"I don't think anyone wants a live in a bubble at all, but it'd be nice to go be wit the guys every day if they set out to take this way to accomplish finishing the season. I think a lot of guys will be for it," Hayes said.
"I know that the Flyers organization has done their due diligence on making sure that every player is protected in a safe environment. I've only been back here for a little bit but so far, it's been incredible. I haven't felt unsafe once."
Hayes also noted that there are things bigger than hockey. He said it sent chills down his spine when he saw the video of Lindblom symbolically ringing the bell at Penn's Abramson Cancer Center.
5) On Tuesday, July 14, the Flyers Caravan is coming to Bucks County to celebrate the return to training camp and getting ready for the playoffs. Tuesday’s route will take off at 3 p.m. from Maple Point Middle School and travel along a three-mile loop of residential streets in Langhorne, Pa.
In lieu of the hands-on activities of years' past, the Flyers have transformed the 2020 Community Caravan into a socially-distant mobile pep rally featuring Flyers Alumni, the Flyers Ice Team, in-arena host Andrea Helfrich and DJ Reed Streets. The Caravan will also include fan giveaways including beach balls, bucket hats, Frisbees, kites and sunglasses.
