This article will be another in my series of player profiles, where I’ll look at each player on the Anaheim Ducks and assess how their season went. This piece will focus on John Gibson.

This season, Gibson struggled a bit for the first time since entering the league, posting just a .904 save percentage and a 3.00 goals against average. In terms of his goals saved above average stat, he ranked 55th of 66 of goalies who played at least 10 NHL games this season.

He still had a lot of great games, but one issue for Gibson was consistency. He had a save percentage between .905 and .920, which could be considered a fairly average range, only six times in 51 games this season. In turn, this meant his games were often either statistically great or poor.

Here’s the breakdown of his save percentage in the 51 games he played this season:

16 games: Above .930
4 games: Between .920 and .929
2 games: Between .910 and .919
7 games: Between .900 and .909
3 games: Between .890 and .899
19 games: Below .890

As you can see, he either had a save percentage higher than .930 or lower than .890 in 35 of his 51 games. This made for some pretty inconsistent results on a game-to-game basis and few statistically average games.

Obviously, Anaheim’s defense plays a huge factor in this as well but Gibson wasn't as great as he'd been in previous seasons. That said, he’s Anaheim’s star player and despite a down year, he remains one of the best goalies in the league. He’s still just 26 years old, signed to an excellent contract and he’s going to be a staple on the Ducks for a very, very long time.
