Edmonton Could Draft 1st Overall And The Hockey World Is Terrified

Last night, something occurred that likely won't be for the good of the league, but certainly was the most chaotic option, giving eight playoff teams a chance for a fantastic consolation prize. Of course I am referring to the fact that it will be one of the losers of the play in round that will draft first overall, Alexis Lafrenière.

The League wanted to crack down on tanking and this season should certainly serve as a reminder to any bottom feeding teams. The Detroit Red Wings had a historically poor season, finishing 23 points lower than any other team; they will draft 4th overall. The Senators had two lottery picks and could have had two picks in the top 3; they will draft 3rd and 5th overall.

Twitter and social media exploded after this reveal, but there was one comment I saw more than any other:

"Oh please don't let it be Edmonton."

Yup, the Edmonton Oilers just became everyone's second favourite team in the Stanley Cup Playoffs because should they lose to the Blackhawks, they will have a chance to draft another superstar.

Lafreniere-McDavid-Kassian
RNH-Draisaitl-Yamamoto

Yeah that would be pretty alright to watch.

Edmonton finishing second in their division and then drafting another 1st overall pick is exactly the kind chaos I have come to expect from 2020.

The Oilers should have the advantage over the Hawks and fans in Edmonton would much rather watch some playoff hockey than have a 12.5% chance at drafting another elite player but a best of 5 series after such a long break throws a bunch of numbers out the window. Regardless, instead of going to a weak bottom team, Lafreniere could end up on an already dominant team.

Imagine if the Penguins lose to the Canadiens then have another elite superstar to play next to Crosby or Malkin, or if Toronto falls to the Blue Jackets then drafts the winger. The results are numerous and the speculation will give fans something to discuss for the time being.

We won't know anything else until at least a couple months from now when the play in games are finished, and the losers are lumped together and one is selected to draft the best player available in the 2020 Draft.

Thanks for reading.
