Would Yzerman consider Strome? Rebuilds during the rebuild

Strome available via trade

2015 was a draft that impacted the league in the form of Connor McDavid. There was no real buildup to his being picked first overall, and Jack Eichel was the known 2nd pick. CMD has been everything the pundits wanted. Eichel is continuing to develop and continues to impress. The third overall pick, however, was Dylan Strome. A left shooting center that seemed to be a missing piece in Arizona’s lineup. It didn’t happen. As with Max Domi, Strome found his way out of AZ via trade along with Brendan Perlini and saw Nick Schmaltz going to the desert.

At first, Strome seemed to find his game in Chi town while Perlini struggled. DS scored 17 goals in 58 games after the trade. This year, he scored 12 goals in 58 games on a team that needs the secondary to step up. Perlini was sent to Motown, and part of me wonders if Strome could be as well. Another low risk/low cost acquisition. It worked with Fabbri in Detroit, but not for Perlini.

These are the kind of deals Yzerman seems to be willing to tinker with to no end. Strome is not a terrible player. He’s had a couple of 20 goal seasons. But, when you are picked after Eichel and before Marner, Hanafin, Zacha, Provarov, Werenski to name a few, it gets to be a bit uncomfortable.

A swift end to the season and a bit of limbo has pushed some of these rumors out there more and more. There is absolutely no way to predict exactly what will happen. It makes Detroit’s situation oddly reassuring. Last place, locked in. No “what ifs” that bubble teams will are screaming about. Face it, whatever happens going forward, everything will have an asterisk attached. If there is a 2020 Cup Champion, they will be the hated abomination of a year gone wrong. “They only won because they had 2 months off and blah blah blah blah”. There are even articles vying for a 31 team playoff format. Good Lord, no. PK Subban likes the idea, but I think that would delegitimize a champion quicker than a gambling ring or a bus load of steroids. Let’s use some common sense on who should really be participating in any playoff format.

While scenarios read a bit like alternate universe comic books (IE sending all the teams to North Dakota to play) Detroit has a very clear path ahead. Say goodbye to several players and draft well. A mock draft done in Michigan has Detroit picking Lafreniere first overall. Shocker. What is interesting is that the fallout shifts around a bit. This mock draft has Stutzle going 7th and Drysdale going 3rd. It’s a lot of guessing, but interesting that Stutzle or Drysdale could fall to 4th assuming that’s where Detroit picks. Possibly the two names most of you have in mind already.

So, enjoy the rampant speculation. It’s all we have for now, but it is comforting for some reason. Let me know if you’d bring Dylan Strome to the D.
