NHL and NHLPA MUST Use this time to work out a new deal. Issues? Mon's Buzz

We NHL fans know better than all other fans how to survive without our sport. We missed a whole year once and big chunks twice more...having hockey taken from us is almost in our blood at this point.

Of course this time is very different, and the world issues are way more frightening, but the end result is the same...we are supposed to be starting the playoffs this week and instead we are stuck in silence. And it sucks bigtime. The playoffs were supposed to start Wednesday, and hockeybuzz will be launching something fun for all that day in our small attempt to soften the blow.

But something else is kind of troubling right now. The NHL and the NHLPA need a new deal before the 2022-23 season, so why not get on zoom RIGHT Now and get it done? It is not like there is much else to do and doing so now would be a major bone to throw at hockey fans.

The major issues are really not that major and unlike last time they are more based on the players wants and needs. And that really boils down to an issue that honestly isn't bog enough to wait for the summer before the 22-23 season to "dig in" on.

The escrow...

Escrows are lousy. But necessary...I really don't see anyway around this system as long as the cap is to be determined on a year by year basis. The concept is until we see how much the league actually makes in a season we can't determine what a 50/50 split actually is. The only way to do so would be to pay the players AFTER the money is made, but of course that isn't what happens in any business. So the players and owners agree to a contract and the players are paid before the final numbers are in as the season is going along. That essentially is the owner's escrow. They pay the players assuming the money will be there. And most of it is there. In stable economies it is highly predictable. We really don't know how stable this new world will be however, and therefore ANY hope the players may have had of killing the escrow is really senseless. It just common sense. That is the reality.

The only way around a yearly escrow could be avoided would be to either set the cap lower or to NOT set the cap on a yearly basis... to set the cap to be stable over say a 5 year period. Such a salary cap would undoubtedly have to be set lower and the players might enjoy not paying escrow but the salaries would suffer way more as a result.

So NHL and NHLPA, let's just get a new ten-year deal done and at least take the fear of more days without hockey away...

What are your thoughts?
