Yesterday would’ve been a very special night at Bridgestone Arena…It is always fun when an O6 team comes to town and Smashville always puts on a good show for our Canadian friends, but last night had all the makings of a great night at the arena.

If all had gone according to plan, last night would’ve been Montreal captain Shea Weber’s 1000th NHL game. A milestone to be sure, one that would’ve been even more special to celebrate in the market where he played 763 of those games.

Weber is Nashville’s first homegrown star, the 2nd round draft pick in the absolutely stacked 2003 NHL Entry Draft, is one of 20 NHL All-Stars in the top 50 of that draft. The kicker is, Weber wasn’t even the top defenseman draft pick of that draft, Ryan Suter was. But the Preds got their anchor defense pairing with Suter and Weber.

Shea Weber made his Nashville debut after a little seasoning in Milwaukee… proof positive that the saying around here that “the road to Nashville goes through Milwaukee.” Is true. That debut came against Detroit in early 2006… he made an immediate impact showing the strong, physical game he has come to be known for along with that lethal slap shot.

That blast has caused more collateral damage than anyone else in the league, a feared shot that sends opponents (and teammates) diving out of the way… is there any wonder that you still see the t-shirts around Bridgestone Arena that have “Pass it to Shea and get out of the way” on them.

Weber remains the first captain ever drafted by the Predators as the fifth captain in franchise history, her has always been a quiet leader both on and off the ice, preferring to lead by example, but certainly not afraid to address issues inside the room… besides his on-ice exploits, Shea was and is a presence in the community. He formed the 365 Pediatric Cancer Fund with his friend Pekka Rinne, an organization that has raised millions for research and relief and is beloved to this day by Fans of the Fang.

I was really looking forward to recognizing Weber’s achievement… just one more thing to add to the pile of things ruined by this damn virus…

So here’s to you Shea… an early congratulations on this achievement… know that you are loved and missed in Smashville and we can’t wait to see you again.
