Tonight the Edmonton Oilers will not be hosting the New York Islanders. While the final result against the Winnipeg Jets wasn't what fans were hoping for, the team as a whole played a much better game and if there was a game tonight, the Oilers would be hoping to continue that trend moving towards the playoffs that may or may not happen now.
Looking at Natural Stat Trick, Edmonton out-chanced the Jets in terms of high danger scoring chances 15-5. Some bad bounces and a fluky goal off James Neal was the difference maker in that game. Considering that the Oilers have won a few games this past week that they shouldn't have, it almost seemed like karma for Edmonton to lose a game that they really should have won.
It's that same kind of bad luck that might mean that despite making the playoffs for the first time in three years that there might not be any playoffs due to COVID-19.
The Islanders did not play last night against the Calgary Flames and so they will be fresh when not playing tonight against the Edmonton Oilers. Currently the Islanders sit 6th in the Metro Division but are only a point out of a Wild Card position. If there was a game tonight, you can bet the Islanders would have been extremely motivated to earn a couple points and get back into the playoff picture.
The Islanders are one of the least penalized teams in the league and have taken the third fewest penalties in the league. Since there are no games being played I imagine that this trend will continue and it is unlikely that the Oilers will earn any powerplays tonight.
