Rough day in middle Tennessee

It’s a little difficult to write a blog on something as insignificant as a hockey game or two. Yes, the Predators have lost their last three, have dropped out of a playoff slot and they are headed into a critical home and home against Dallas, but once again, life intervenes, and my adopted hometown is dealing with forces of nature that bring out the best in us as people.

As you can tell… I’m not going to talk much about hockey today. Less than 36 hours ago as I write this, a tornado ripped through middle Tennessee in the middle of the night… cutting a swath of death and destruction that is difficult to wrap your mind around. Twenty-four of our friends and neighbors lost their lives as the storm cut through Nashville neighborhoods like Germantown and East Nashville, staying on the ground for almost 10 minutes… then hit Donelson, Mt. Juliet, Wilson County and Cookeville in Putnam county.

As the sun rose yesterday, the devastation it revealed was stunning and heart breaking.

But then, middle Tennessee did what we always do… what we did in 1998, what we did in 2010… we got to work. We came out in droves to help our neighbors… we pitched in… we donated… we volunteered. The hockey community came together, committing to help, donating money to the relief efforts, rivalries put aside. Former Preds owner (and current Minnesota Wild owner) Craig Leipold donated $25,000 as did his team. The NHL matched that donation and teams across the league jumped in as well.

Sometimes… as divided as we appear in these hyper-partisan times… situations like this bring us together and show that we are not different as we are told.

I appreciate the readers that reached out and checked on us… we were lucky. So many were not…

If you would like to help… here’s how…

You can donate money through the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, CFMT is also accepting donations of personal hygiene items, bleach, trash bags, gloves and box cutters.

You can text RELIEF2020 to 41444 to give via your mobile device through the United Way.

Second Harvest Food Bank is providing meals and support, you can donate here or call them at 615-329-3491.

If you would like to volunteer… Hands on Nashville is there to coordinate relief efforts.

To all that have already volunteered, supported, contributed… thank you. Middle Tennessee will meet this challenge as we always do, your support will help tremendously and means the world.
