Panic Over

Yesterday, Le Journal de Québec and numerous rumour sites were reporting that Shea Weber's season might be in jeopardy. To be honest, when it's those kind of sources, I don't panic. However at 12:52 today Nick Kypreos tweeted this:

That sufficed to send shockwaves throughout Twitter and the story was picked up by pretty much every single news outlet out there. While the Canadiens had said that there wouldn't be an update about Weber's health until the end of the week, they finally did release something about 10 minutes ago:

According to François Gagnon in an article published at 16:00 today, Weber traveled to Wisconsin to see the surgeon who operated on him in 2018 and see if the tendons he fixed then were still intact. From what RDS could gather, the current injury has got nothing to do with the one from 2018 and that was confirmed by the Canadiens' official medical update.

As per usual, the Habs are not saying much. They kept it short saying that the captain had suffered a ankle sprain, that it would take 4 to 6 weeks to heal and that a full recovery was expected. This should put the whole "career in jeopardy" ramblings to bed at least for now. Of course, there will always be those who will say that the Canadiens are still hiding something but for now at least, all we can do is believe them.

The Canadiens' season ends in Toronto on April 4th. That's a mere 8 weeks away and in my opinion, it's highly unlikely that Weber will return before then. Let's face is, there wouldn't be much of a point. The Canadiens are 7-3 in their last 10 games and yet, they are still 7 points out of the playoffs having played more games than anyone else. With a depleted blue line, the odds of catching up to the qualifying teams are slim to none even though Sports Club Stats put them at 2.6%. Should Weber not come back, he will have played 55 games this season and racked up 34 points. This is a real shame because he was on course to have a career year points wise and the Canadiens sure could have used his help in the tail end of the season.

So, let's forget about Weber for the foreseeable future and see what our Habs can do without him. If Jeff Petry steps up as he normally does when Weber is out, things could be bearable but that also means that it is even more unlikely that Marc Bergevin will make number 26 available at the trade deadline.
