Quick Hits: January 24, 2020

1) Flyers right winger Travis Konecny will be one of the eight participants in the fastest skater event at the NHL All-Star Skills competition on Friday night. The other competitiors: Jack Eichel, Nathan MacKinnon, Connor McDavid, Mathew Barzal, Chris Kreider, Anthony Duclair and Quinn Hughes.

Konecny, along with the other 35 participating position players, will shoot in the goaltender save streak event. The Shooting Stars event (the one in which competitors shoot from an elevated platform about 30 feet above ice level, aiming at on-ice targets) were determined by online fan voting; eight NHL players along with two women's hockey players will participate. Konecny was not among the players selected. Konecny is also not part of the hardest shooter or accuracy shooting events.

2) On the Flyers' offficial website, I listed my selections for the annual Flyers team awards if the votes had to be submitted today. I do not participate in the balloting for the Pelle Lindbergh Memorial (selected by Flyers players for the teammate who improved the most from the beginning of the season to the end) or the Gene Hart Memorial (selected by the Flyers Fan Club for the player who demonstrates the most heart and determination). Nevertheless, I gave my picks for those awards as well as the media-selected awards.

The article explains my reasoning behind each selection, and the runners-up for each category. When we vote, we list our first-place, second-place and third-place choices, although only the winner and not the runners-up are identified on the night of the awards presentation. My selections are as follows:

Bobby Clarke Trophy: Sean Couturier (runners up: Travis Konecny, Ivan Provorov)
Barry Ashbee Trophy: Ivan Provorov (runners up: Matt Niskanen, Travis Sanheim)
Yanick Dupre Memorial: Scott Laughton (runners up: Justin Braun, Michael Raffl)
Pelle Lindbergh Memorial: Travis Konecny (runners up: Joel Farabee, Phil Myers)
Gene Hart Memorial: Oskar Lindblom/ Sam Morin co-winners (runner up: Brian Elliott)

3) The best news of this week: Oskar Lindblom, who is undergoing treatment for Ewing's Sarcoma, was able to take a skate on the ice at the Skate Zone this week. He had his dog with him for company. Lindblom posted a photo to his Instagram account.

4) Coming off a 3-2 shootout loss in Providence on Wednesday, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms and Bruins will rematch tonight. The Phantoms are 5-0-1 in their last six games.

5) Today in Flyers History: The gloves came off with regularity and the goal light behind the visiting team net was turned on even more frequently when the Philadelphia Flyers humiliated the Washington Capitals, 6-1, at the Spectrum on Jan. 24, 1990. On his way to his second career 50-assist season and the Bobby Clarke Trophy as the Flyers most valuable player, playmaking wizard Pelle Eklund racked up four assists. Three came at even strength, one was on the power play.

6) January 24 Flyers Alumni birthday: Best known as the backup to Bernie Parent and, later, a longtime Flyers broadcast analyst alongside legendary play-by-play man Gene Hart, Bobby "Chief" Taylor was born in Calgary on Jan. 24, 1945.
