New York Islanders’ prospects Oliver Wahlstrom and Jake Pivonka had their World Junior tournament come to a disappointing end today, as Team USA was shutout by Finland in the quarterfinal.

Wahlstrom, New York’s 2018 first-round pick finished the tournament with a goal and four assists in five games. Pivonka, a fourth-round pick in the same draft, had one assist. The early exit is a let down for the American team, considering how stacked the roster was heading into the tournament.

As for some thoughts on the players, while I think Wahlstrom was fine at the tournament, he was far from dominant. I think it’s pretty likely that he spends the remainder of the season in Bridgeport, to allow his contract to slide another year. As for Pivonka, this is the first time I really got to see much of him (and I didn't get to catch every U.S. game either) so I can’t say I have much of an opinion. He was given a very limited role and it wouldn't be fair to pass judgement just yet. Neither of the two will be eligible to return to the tournament next year.
