Madison Bowey made it through waivers and has been assigned to Grand Rapids. A player is rarely labeled “expendable”, particularly through the press. It seems the first step in a separation. Interestingly, Bowey does have a bit of history playing with the Jets Morrissey. At times, a successful waiver to the minors can increase trade value. There seems to be something brewing in Motown.

For the most part, it is hard to blame Bowey for struggling on a team where everyone is struggling. It may come down to attitude. There was one quote that surprised me yesterday from the former 2nd round pick. “I think I’ve been making great progress all year,” Bowey said. “I think a few tough games there in a row but other than that, I thought I played well.“

Not to pick on any player, but no one on this squad should be saying they thought they played well. Larkin, Bertuzzi, Mantha, Fabbri all talk about “We” and how they need to do more. Not one of them is going to defend their own numbers while the team is at the bottom of the league. Yzerman wants intensity, this quote would seem to lack that.

As was pointed out in the last article, which you can read here Athanasiou has been dealing with some injury issues and is a scratch. The skeptic in me senses a deal is nearing. There is no rumor to that end, specifically, but A.A. and Bowey to Winnipeg for (?) is certainly a possibility.

Apart from Comrie facing his old team tonight, the matchup against Winnipeg will have many of the same issues as every night. Hellebuyck has found his game with an impressive .934 sv% and 2.19 GAA. It is impossible to figure out what Comrie’s stats are like this year due to lack of playing. The Jets aren’t the high scoring offensive force they had been with 2.83 GF (19th) but are still sound defensively giving up 2.7GA for 8th in the league. Scoring more than they give up, a lofty goal for the current Wings team who still sit at 31st in both Goals for a 2.13 and goals against at 3.97. Uncomfortably close to giving up twice what they score. Shockingly, Detroit’s PP is ranked slightly higher at 15.5 (26th) to Winnipeg’s 15.4 (27th) but the PK favors the Jets at 76.4 (26th) to Detroit’s 72.2 (31st). It sounds like the goals Hellebuyck does let in would be at a man down. Total special teams numbers are oddly close with WPG at 91.8 and DET at 87.7. Neither team wants to be short handed in this one.

There is a chance that Detroit could pull one out, but it would be a reversal of fortunes in nearly every category. If Larkin and co can harness the energy of their last period vs Pittsburgh for 60 mins, they could certainly surprise everyone, including themselves.

Apologies for the late entry. There will be a post game entry late tonight or early tomorrow. Enjoy the game!
