Successful Road Trip, But No Goalies are This Good

The Coyotes beat the Blackhawks 4=3 in yet another shootout last night.

The Coyotes went 3-1 and their one loss was a 1-0 affair against the Penguins.

So while the results are good, the team continues to have scoring problems.

The game against Columbus last week was the only time in a month and half that they scored over four goals in regulation.

You've also got to take shoot-out victories with a grain of salt because they're essentially coinflips.

So on the bright side, they could easily have gone 4-0 on the road.

And if you're really pessimistic, you can view it as them scoring four goals in one game against one of the worst teams, then wasting a great Raanta performance aginst the Penguins, while winning a coin-flip vs Chicago.

Ultimately, I think it's worth being positive about the results, but just keep in mind that when you lead the NHL with a 94.39 5v5 save percentage, you're hiding a lot of flaws.

If you knew you could get that level of goaltending going forward you wouldn't care, but the history of the NHL says that no goalies or defense are quite this good.

The Coyotes are ninth in the NHL in points percentage, and sixth in points.

Enjoy the ride, but remember that when a team is 3rd last in shot-attempts percentage (Corsi) and first in save percentage, and they happen to be getting good results, history tells us that team is a mirage.

Today the standings say that the Coyotes and Islanders are significantly better than the Hurricanes and Leafs, but the stats say differently.

If you want to make some money, nothing is guaranteed, but the probability is probably quite a bit better than the odds you'll get, so go nuts.
