Few Red Wings fans will forget the look on Moritz Seider’s face when he was selected 6th overall. That look, along with the shocked reactions from mock draft experts was just the first surprise of many for the 18 year old German defenseman. Last night, Seider scored his first AHL goal. He was the third man in a breakaway and apparently, he has a wicked wrist shot. He went to one knee and did the “sliding archer” celly as if he was already an expert. Elation for the young prospect who, at 18, has 1 goal and 9 assists in 18 games. He plays with an edge (which can lead to penalties) and is a gifted skater. Steve Yzerman knew what this organization needed on the blue line and he picked up a gem. The video highlights for last night’s game are worth the watch:

While the sugar buzz is going, Zadina collected his 6th assist and has 6 goals as well in 17 games. He’s producing at a much better clip this year. Joe Veleno has 3 goals and 5 assists in 18 games, but is coming on more of late. The decision for these kids to play in Grand Rapids is undoubtedly a solid one. They are enjoying success and focusing on development. Coach Ben Simon is a fantastic mentor and a credit to the organization. If you’ve never been to. Griffins game, do yourself a favor. My wife and I used to commute from New Boston on Friday nights to watch. It’s a 2 hour drive, but the atmosphere is fantastic. Completely different, and a lot of fun.

On to the task at hand, Detroit’s matchup against Columbus tonight. After Columbus had the most exciting trade deadline of any team in recent memory, there has been a bit of a backlash with all of the departures. For the past few seasons, Columbus has been in a much better position than Detroit and seems to be a team whose stock is continually on the rise. This year, things aren’t quite on track. In fact, Detroit and Columbus are very closely matched in far more categories than would be expected. Columbus has a PP% of 15.6 to Detroit’s 15.1% (24th and 25th). The PK for the Blue Jackets sits at 77.6% (22nd) to Detroit’s 72.2% (30th) with only a .5% separation. Columbus has a total special teams # of 93.2% to Detroit’s 87.3%. Only a 6% separation is a surprise for a team that was knocking on the door.

Both teams sit at the bottom of the league with CBJ garnering 2.5 goals for(29th) and 3.2 against (21st) and Detroit at 2.35 for (31st) and 3.7 against (31st). Sergei Bobrovsky is certainly missed in Ohio.

The warning for this game is the same as with Ottawa. Columbus expects themselves to be contenders and will fight for dear life to avoid losing to Detroit. Detroit’s preparation against teams who perform similarly always seems to be lackluster. When Boston comes to town, the boys are ready to play. When Ottawa comes, the Wings look lost. Blashill and Co need to prepare like it’s the Bruins every game they play.

Mike Green and Darren Helm are both likely out of the lineup. Christopher Ehn and Joe Hicketts were both recalled. Hicketts brings speed and the Wings will need it. Cam Atkinson is the source of great pain for Detroit. Zach Werenski loves playing his longtime friend Dylan Larkin and the two will compete hard to come out on top. This game has every possibility of the Wings finding a way to win IF they play 60 minutes. The 2nd period is critical. Far too many times 3 second period goals put this team away.

There are a lot of good things on the horizon for Detroit. There is an influx of talent developing in Grand Rapids and players like Athanasiou and Fabbri are really coming on for the big club. The patience model Yzerman is practicing is starting to bear some fruit, and will lead to some exciting times. Enjoy the game!
