The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Chicago Blackhawks for the second time this season last night. Here’s the game recap.

The Hurricanes controlled the play in the first period, outshooting Chicago 13-4 and it was Martin Necas who got the game’s first goal on a 2-on-0, after a series of back and forth passes with Nino Niederreiter.

Then under a minute into the second period, Andrei Svechnikov continued his hot start, beating Robin Lehner on a shot that looked like it deflected off Brent Seabrook’s stick to increase Carolina’s lead to 2-0. Svechnikov then nearly blew the game wide open with his second of the game but Olli Maatta tied up his stick just enough for Svechnikov to not get all of the puck, allowing Lehner to make the save with his toe. Sebastian Aho then got a chance of his own, stripping the puck from Duncan Keith and going in on a breakaway but he was also turned away by Lehner. Niederreiter finally did get the Hurricanes their three-goal lead, as he got a pass and went in all alone on Lehner and beat him on the backhand. Hurricanes led 3-0 after the second and were outshooting Chicago 27-12.

Chicago broke Petr Mrazek’s shutout in the third period, when Patrick Kane found Erik Gustafsson rushing to the front of the net and the two connected. Then a bit later, Kane got the puck to Connor Murphy, who took a shot that Mrazek got a piece of but ultimately, the puck still found its way in. Now the lead is at 3-2– Mrazek can’t let that one trickle by him.

He did make up for it though, making several quality saves in final minutes, most notably one on Kane after he split the Hurricanes’ defense. Sebastian Aho eventually secured the win, scoring an empty net goal with about 15 seconds to go.
