The Louis Domingue era is upon us.

Just over two weeks after acquiring Domingue for a 7th round pick, the New Jersey Devils have recalled the 27-year-old netminder.

Domingue played four games with the Baby Devils prior to this move, leading the team to points in three while posting a solid .918 save percentage.

Dating back to the beginning of the 2017-18 season, Domingue has posted a .913 SV% (.809 SV% vs high-danger shots) at 5v5 spanning over 45 appearances.

Cory Schneider owns a .909 SV% (.800 vs HD shots) during that same period of time, although he played in 72 games.

To me, this move means the Devils are ready to put Schneider on the back burner. He hasn’t performed well or given the coaching staff any reason to believe that can change in the immediate future.

UPDATE: Cory Schneider has been waived with the intention of sending him to Binghamton. Definitely on the back burner!

There’s a reason Blackwood was given the start in Montreal the night after a 39-shot workload in Pittsburgh. They thought a fatigued Blackwood gave them a better chance to win and, as it turns out, they were right.

With that said, Blackwood can’t start every game – or anything remotely close. That’s simply not realistic in today’s NHL, especially for a 22-year-old who has made 50+ regular season appearances once dating back to his days breaking into the OHL in 2013-14.

They need to give Blackwood some rest on occasion, and they’re clearly more comfortable doing so with Domingue manning the net than Schneider. At this point, it’s hard to blame them.

My guess is Domingue gets his first start this weekend – likely Saturday night against Detroit.
