Make it 10 in a row for the New York Islanders.
Now 11-3 this season, the Islanders beat the Ottawa Senators 4-1 yesterday to keep their undefeated streak alive. Here’s the game recap.
Ottawa struck first, when Ryan Pulock and Noah Dobson had a bad miscommunication behind New York’s net, the puck came out to Jean-Gabriel Pageau and he put a nice shot high on the glove side to beat Thomas Greiss. Obviously that’s just a terrible error from two very good defenseman but it’s unlikely we see that happen very often.
It wouldn’t cost New York either, as about 30 seconds later, Cal Clutterbuck got the puck from a battle in front of the net and roofed it over Craig Anderson to tie it up. The Islanders almost took the lead on a rush later in the period, when Nikita Zaitsev fell while in transition but Anderson made some great saves to keep it 1-1.
The teams traded chances in the second period but both Anderson and Greiss were great. With a few minutes to go in the period though, Cole Bardreau was taken down and received a penalty shot on which he didn’t miss, scoring his first NHL goal. It sure wasn’t a great shot and it’s one Anderson would surely want back but it’s a memorable way to score your first, nonetheless.
In the third period, the Islanders extended the lead while killing a penalty, as Cal Clutterbuck got in on another goal, taking the puck down on a two-on-one and feeding Casey Cizikas, who one-timed it past Anderson. New York then iced it under a minute later, when Noah Dobson threw the puck on net and Josh Bailey tipped it perfectly to the top corner.
This was actually a pretty close game altogether but also one where the Islanders played well. Greiss didn’t have to make a ton of excellent saves but he was there when called upon.
New York’s next game is tomorrow, when they host the Pittsburgh Penguins.
