Hello World!

The Capitals were finally able to hang onto a third period 2-goal lead as they downed the Stars 4-1 in big D. This was the Caps first regulation win in Dallas since October 17th 1995. According to Josh Clark at NHL.com, the Stars were 13-0-4 in their last 17 home games vs the Capitals. It was the NHL's longest active points streak against one team. The Capitals played well tonight and avenged the loss to Dallas last week, a game the Caps dominated and should have won. Here are my takeaways:

1. The Caps PK - The boys in red killed off all of Dallas' six PP opportunities and really didn't give up many high danger chances. The Caps were very successful in the face off circle tonight, especially on the PK. It really felt like every time the Stars got a PP, the Caps won the first face off and cleared the puck out. The Stars had less time to set up and they appeared to be growing frustrated as the game went on. The Stars are 1/20 on the power play this season (5.0%). The Capitals are 18/21 on the PK this season (85.7%) which currently ranks #9 in the league.

2. John Carlson, American Hero - He is one of my favorite players in hockey (I even sport his number for my beer league). He is currently ranked 4th in the league in total points and ranks 1st among all D-men. He finished 4th in the Norris trophy voting last year, 5th the year before. He has what it takes to win the Norris and he's off to a great start this year. It's never too early to start campaigning... CARLSON FOR NORRIS!!!

3. Ilya Samsonov - Lets just get this out of the way. It's pronounced "Sam-SO--Nov" not "Sam-sah-nov". You really have to fight the urge to say "Sah". Go ahead... try it. Anyways... another fantastic night for the rookie netminder. That's back to back starts where he's only allowed one goal. The only goal he let in tonight was a quick little wrap around where he had his right pad slightly elevated. All in all, he looks very sharp and I'm absolutely loving what I'm seeing so far this season, he just needs to tighten up some of those rookie mistakes. I'd say there is like a 50-50 chance he's our starting goaltender next year.
