Penguins looking at UFA forward help?

According to Bob McKenzie there are a number of teams who are really interested in signing current UFA Brian Boyle.

The Penguins are more than likely one of those teams given they are currently without four of their top nine forwards (Malkin, Bjugstad, Rust, Galchenyuk).

This would be on brand for post-Cup Jim Rutherford. Boyle is slow and has size. He scored 18 goals last year between New Jersey and Nashville. He also had a career high shooting percentage of 14.6% up from his 9.3% average. If the Penguins were to add him to the roster they would be willingly getting slower and hoping he continues to shoot at a career best rate because there wasn’t much else he was bringing to the table last year

In my opinion this would be like re-signing Matt Cullen except in the form of a 6’6” frame. Sure, the Penguins are up against it with injuries right now, but I’d rather they play the AHL guys because at this point Boyle is replacement level anyways. If they sign Boyle and get healthy you know the team will feel obligated to play him because he’s a veteran. His style of play isn’t where this team should be going for help.

Where is the offense coming from?

The Penguins are never going to become a team where defense drives them towards success. Brian Boyle only knows one way to play. This would just be another addition that flies in the face of the style the Penguins won two championships with.
