Fiala In The Fold

On the eve of Wild training camp opening, the last remaining RFA, Kevin Fiala, has agreed to a new two-year deal with the club. The contract is worth $6 million for the 24 year old forward who was acquired at the trade deadline for Mikael Granlund.

An unpopular deal for Wild fans at the time may in turn become one of the better legacies from former Wild GM, Paul Fenton's, short tenure in the State of Hockey.

Fiala comes at a fraction of Granlund's cost, combine that with his entering the final year of his contract and free agency looming on July 1st at the very least the Wild are in a much better financial position heading into 2019-20 season. Now of course the biggest question is, will Fiala fulfill the promise many have expected of him?

That will come in time and with the Wild in desperate need of offense he has ample opportunity to crack the top six up front. Combine that with some disappointment from his camp at the offer, or at least in the delay that he took to agree, the chip on the shoulder and desire for more cash may be the motivation combo he needs.

New Wild GM, Bill Guerin, had stated that the Wild made a fair offer to Fiala and that the ball was in his court to accept it and be ready for camp. Stating the fact that players that miss camp often struggle during the season.

Message received by Fiala and now it is time to get to work.
