In this edition of the hotstove, we share our picks for the Selke Trophy in 2019-20.

Todd Cordell

Mark Stone.

Though the award generally goes to centers, I think Stone is more than capable of bucking the trend. His ability to impact the game at both ends of the ice is rivalled by few, if any.

Despite missing 23 games, Stone just finished 2nd in Goals Above Replacement at even-strength, per Evolving-Hockey. His relative impact on CF%, GF%, and xGF% was best among all players who played a regular shift and appeared in 40+ games.

Stone definitely belongs in the conversation with Patrice Bergeron, Ryan O'Reilly, Sean Couturier, and the other names you usually see favored for the Selke. I think a lot of people are going to realize now that Stone is more so in the spotlight playing for a team with a legitimate shot at contending for the Stanley Cup.

James Tanner

I'd like to see Alex Kerfoot join the Leafs and win the Selke, as some of the amateur stats enthusiasts thought he should have won last year, and I don't think I've ever picked a Leafs player in one of these things.   The thing is though, 11 voters voted Mitch Marner, one of the worst defensive players, as the Selke Winner, so you can't predict these things.   I'll go with Mark Stone as the winner this year, as a full year outside of Ottawa will cement his status as one of the league's best all round players.
