The San Jose Sharks chose not to bring back veteran Patrick Marleau after two years in Toronto, but have re-signed center Joe Thornton to a one-year, $2 Million contract. Thornton, 40, had 51 points in the regular season and 10 points in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and still effective in spite of losing more than a step.

Jake Gardiner has finally found a home, signing a four-year, $16.2 Million deal with Carolina.

The action gets started this weekend with rookie tournaments in places like Traverse City, MI and Buffalo, NY. Most of the players participating are years away from making their mark in the NHL, but there are a few like Devils top pick Jack Hughes and Rangers first rounder Kappo Kakko who could have an impact almost immediately.
